Maplehurst students in Mrs. Caitlyn Cannon's class had a very special reader from Ecuador-Ell assistant Wenddy Riems' daughter lives there and she writes children's books. Andrea Rivadeneira wrote the book "Lulu and Ellie:Days of Nerves". She read this book to the first graders from Ecuador. Miss Kaitlyn Smith's kindergarten class had a guest reader from Africa-Maddie Roche Anderson, formerly from Norwalk, read to her students on Friday. She read a story her dad wrote when she was a child. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about Africa and Ecuador-we are grateful for these amazing opportunities.
Friday was flashlight friday and each student was given a flashlight to use to read "in the dark" in their classrooms. Miss Kaitlyn Smith's students were caught reading under their desks.

Maplehurst Elementary is celebrating right to read week with a theme of "book an adventure". Guest readers are coming in each day to read to the students in their classrooms. First grade students in Mrs. Kingsborough's class went on an adventure to Africa! Former Norwalk resident Maddie (Roche) Anderson lives in Africa with her husband. Maddie read to the students today via zoom from Africa. Maddie read a story her dad wrote when she was little and her sister illustrated it. Because Africa is eight hours ahead of us, it was 10:30 at night there so Maddie shared pictures she had taken with the students. She spoke to them about the weather, the landscape, the animals, the currency and the foods they eat. The students were not excited about the idea of eating bugs-which is something people in Africa eat. A student asked Maddie why they eat bugs and she responded that many people in Africa are poor and cannot afford to buy food and bugs are free. The students were attentive and engaged and asked many good questions. We are grateful to have had this opportunity.

Maplehurst Right to Read Week is March 2-6 with a theme of Book an Adventure. Guest readers will be coming in all week, there is a reading challenge for students, a kick off assembly on Monday morning, a school wide bingo game and dress up days. It is also book fair week.

146 League students earned their way to Snow Trails as part of our PBIS reward for strong grades, positive behavior, and consistent effort! We are so proud of the hard work, responsibility, and leadership our students have shown. When expectations are clear and students rise to meet them, we celebrate big. ❄️ At League, effort matters. Character matters. Growth matters. And today, 146 students showed exactly what that looks like!
